Week 29 / Activity 5 - Using Social Networks to Improve Practice

Activity 5: Using social online networks in teaching or professional development

We are tasked to: Create a reflective entry where you critically discuss the use of social media in YOUR teaching OR professional development. Your reflection should be based on a reflective model of your choice.

I chose to look at the social media I use for professional development.
Again, I have chosen to use a slide to present my information in a way that is more engaging for me. (Sorry there is a lot of writing this week!)

What types of social media do you use for professional development? Does the way you like to learn have an impact on the way you engage online?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts...

Enjoy!

  1. Hi Kelsey,

I am such a newbie when it comes using social networks, not to mention using them to improve practice. Emailing to arrange a face to face meeting is the most common thing I do. However, I have been fortunate to have spent most of my teaching life in 3 large schools, ranging from 14 to 20 mathematics teachers. I feel that network has helped develop my lack of a need to be involved with an online network.

You make very valid points regarding the benefits of being involved in online networks.

Do you think it is mostly members of small clusters that are leading the way in the use of social networking to improve practice?

    1. I would be interested in your definition Matthew " Do you think it is mostly members of small clusters that are leading the way in the use of social networking to improve practice? "

I am aware of some large Districts in the USA who are very switched on using social networking effectively. Of course they number in the tens of thousands, so no NZ cluster could approach that.

    2. Hey Matthew,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on my post. I am making the inference that you may be a secondary math teacher from you comment of "3 large schools... 14-20 mathematics teachers"? Have you come across Eddie Woo on your online searches? He may be of interest to you https://misterwootube.com/ Or if you would be interested in a Manaiakalani connection Monty Jones may be of interest to you https://sites.google.com/a/manaiakalani.org/onair/jones

I am not sure whether it is members of smaller clusters that are leading the way. It has been my experience thus far that that is the case for me in my context. However, I am aware that NZ is a small country and I am fortunate to be in an associated Manaiakalani Cluster.

I am also interested in Dorothy's comment above - what qualifies a small cluster in your eyes? Also, do you know of any other contexts that use social networking to improve practise?

I look forward to hearing from you,

      - Kelsey

Is there one Cluster in particular that you would recommend following?
